VE rebuild

#33877

Post by peachyquaver » Wed Nov 14, 2012 9:45 pm

I've been tossing and turning, deciding which way to go with the engine as it's being built in Feb in the front room when the mrs is away. Time's a tickin' and I've made a solid decision, it's going turbo and that's the final answer.

I'll probably be asking a fair few silly questions in here as I've not fully rebuilt an engine and it will be my first turbo outing.

First things first though, I'll be building the engine with VET pistons and get that run in while I save more coins for the turbo bits. I'm aiming for something with minimal lag, and for track use.

I'm building a shopping list for the engine only to be ordered shortly, got the usual OE guff: gasket kit, rings, chain, tensioner etc..

What sort of bearings are available for the VE? I noticed Gspec have ACL Race bearings for the DE but nothing mentioned about the VE.

The bearings are the same as the de. What block you using. I will be building at same time so keep an eye on my build.

I see, prolly go for the ACL's in that case.

As for the block I'm using, it's a VE 53J. I thought there was only one type of VE block?

Yes, Just make sure you get the 5-hole main bearings to take advantage of the better oiling properties, vs. the regular SR20 single hole mains. Also, Greg can get almost anything you want, even if it's not listed on his site. You just need to shoot him am email or a call. I usually email him and he gets back to me quickly. He is a pleasure to deal with. http://www.gspec.com/t-contact.aspx.

You can also get the bearings through Mazworx. http://www.mazworx.com/products/engine/ ... -bearings/

^^ just answered why I asked the question, I didn't know if you were using a VE or a DE block.

Yeah get the bearings with the 5-holes, as this guy said. Way better for the VE's

I get why you asked now, I'll be sure to order the five holies.

I'll be ordering the whole lot from Greg to save on shipping, but will I need to split the bottom end before I order to find out what bearings I need? I seem to remember reading something about 4 different sizes, or is there only one for the VE?

If everything is working and the engine is running fine ACL STD is all you should need.

You should only need to change the sizes if you are re-grinding the crank.

Cool, I won't be doing that. It was running sweet when I pulled it so it should be bless inside.
