VE or SR's in general are more beefy I think.

2zz had several problems with head, lubricating cams and oil pump. The bottom of 2zz is real beefy, take a look on stock con rods ;) 2zz start to live past 6500rpm before that it runs like 1.6-1.8. Tranny is stepped close but not enough to stay on lift so thats why many people brake the synchros trying have nice powerband and acceleration.

If we are talking about synchros in any tranny they don't like treating with force. About the engine like I wrote above.
